Cooking Classes at Chef Eric's Culinary Classroom

Founded in 2003, Chef Eric's Culinary Classroom is one of LA’s finest culinary education centers. With a state-of-the-art test kitchen that allows students to train in a professional environment, this culinary classroom is a great place to start learning the art of cooking from instructors with years of experience as professional chefs. The lessons taught aim to teach students how professional chefs approach the process of cooking. Students who complete these courses will better understand the science behind food preparation. Courses include introductory classes that cover basic cooking techniques, advanced classes that aim to prepare students for professional cooking careers and overview courses that focus on specific regional cuisines and traditions. Whether you are looking for a fun way to spend an evening learning how to cook Thai food or want to figure out if a career in the culinary field is right for you, Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom offers a course to fit your needs.

One of the Culinary Classroom’s most popular courses is their 4-Week Culinary Basics which lasts for four sessions and gives students an introduction to all the fundamental skills that expert chefs need to create elaborate and memorable meals. Each lesson will cover a basic technique through a hands-on set of lessons that give students the practical experience they need to become more comfortable in the kitchen. Students will start by learning the basic knife and sauteing skills by preparing a chicken and potato stew, and the next three lessons will cover meal preparation and organization, pasta, sauces and potatoes, and beef, fish and shellfish meals. By the end of the course, students will have made nearly a dozen different dishes and can leave the course confident in their newfound cooking abilities.

Students looking to learn specific culinary skills may want to enroll in a course like Chef Eric’s Bread Fundamentals. In this class, students will learn the art of making one of the oldest foods in human history, bread. Students will learn the science behind bread making and how they can quickly and easily prepare unique and delicious bread for any meal or occasion. The course covers four different bread recipes that are perfect for everyday meals or special occasions, including Pain de Ménage, Brioche Bread, Baguettes, and Focaccia Bread. The course aims to teach students how to prepare different styles of bread and use simple accouterments like jam and oil to turn a simple loaf of bread into an easy and delicious meal component.

Another kind of course offered at Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom is focused cuisine classes, like the school’s Thai Cuisine course. In this class, students will learn how to create traditional Southeast Asian cuisine and prepare meals using the same tried and true techniques used in Thai restaurants. Students will start making hand-rolled vegetable spring rolls with a homemade garlic-lime dipping sauce. The main dish will consist of stir-fried chicken and vegetables in a spicy coconut curry and a traditional spicy chicken pad thai. Students will also prepare Thai eggplants and green beans, and traditional long grain rice to complement the meal. Once students have completed the class, they will have a better understanding of this rich and historical culinary tradition, and they can start exploring more complex and elaborate Thai recipes confident in their skills.

Pizza Cooking Classes at VPN Americas

VPN Americas is the American arm of the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, an international body formed in the mid-80s dedicated to bringing the traditional art of Neapolitan pizza making to the world. Since then, they have set up schools in dozens of countries to help chefs develop their personal culinary skills to create delicious pizzas in a classic Italian tradition. Naples has been the center of the pizza world for over three hundred years and VPN aims to ensure that this tradition remains alive and well in pizzerias and home kitchens across the globe. Pizza is an incredibly versatile and popular food, so learning how to create authentic, traditional Neapolitan pizza is a great way to spend an evening developing a new skill you can take back to your home once the class is complete. At VPN Americas, you’ll work with the freshest ingredients and learn hand-tossing techniques to turn you into a pizza-making pro.

Students with no prior experience beyond oven-baking frozen pizza might want to enroll in the Basic Pizza Course. In this class, students will learn the theoretical science that underpins traditional Neapolitan pizza, the equipment required to make a traditional pizza and the essential ingredients (flour, plum tomatoes, extra–virgin olive oil and cheeses). Then, students will spend several hours hand-making a pizza using these traditional techniques. Students will hand prepare, leaven, cut and shape the dough, and they will learn the proper art of tossing and stretching pizza dough into the necessary shape. They will then learn how to add the proper toppings to the pizza and ready it for cooking (including getting the oven’s temperature and timing correct). By the end of the class, students will have prepared a traditional pizza, and they will receive a gift bag that includes many of the ingredients used in the kitchen so that they can prepare another pizza at home.

Students looking for a unique pizza-making experience can enroll in the Speciality Pizza Course. This course will see students making one of a handful of gluten-free pizzas that can be made for any occasion. The course begins with a lesson on the scientific and practical aspects of preparing a gluten-free meal, including how to prepare a safe work environment. Students will then get hands-on experience preparing a pizza in one of three ways. The course covers preparing a Pizza Montanara, which is a deep–fried pizza, a gluten-free pizza, and a whole wheat pizza. These diverse styles will help teach students how to prepare different and unique gluten-free pizzas, meaning that their gluten-free offerings can be as varied as their regular offerings. As with the basic pizza course, students who enroll will be able to take home gluten-free ingredients that they can use to replicate one of these recipes in their own kitchen.

Students who want to turn their pizza-related passions into a career may want to consider enrolling in VPN America’s Regular Pizza Course. This course is designed to teach students how to prepare Neapolitan pizzas in a professional kitchen environment and how to ensure that the quality of their product meets the high standards of the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana. Students will receive a lecture on the history of pizza in the US and the proper methods of preparing and cooking a Neapolitian pizza. Then, they will enter the kitchen workshop and receive hands-on training in the process of preparing all of the ingredients (including fresh meat and cheese) and the dough for their pizzas. They will learn how to cook and serve a Neapolitan pizza, variations on the classic dish and how to work with multiple pizzas at once in a professional setting. Once students have completed the hands-on portion of the course, they will have the opportunity to take a practical skills exam and become officially licensed pizzarios by a board representing the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana.

Home Crafts at El Camino College

El Camino College is one of LA’s leading adult education and training centers and they offer a diverse range of classes to suit your personal and professional needs. In addition to practical professional development courses in skills like Excel or Adobe applications, El Camino College offers social, hobbyist courses for students looking to learn new skills, meet new people or just have an enjoyable afternoon outside of the house. El Camino College offers a number of one day crafting classes that will teach students how they can make their own home goods, including soap, shampoo and decorative and scented candles. All of these courses are beginner-friendly, accessible spaces to learn practical DIY skills and the casual atmosphere makes these classes ideal places for students to introduce themselves to a new hobby in a low stakes environment.

Students who want to learn a practical home craft should consider El Camino College’s Soap Making—Cold Process Method course. In this class, students will learn the technical process of oil and lye into usable hand soap that you can take with you back to your kitchen. Students will learn the basics of the cold process method for making soap in their own homes and how different herbs, essential oils and other additives can be included in a recipe to make soap that is colored differently, feels different on the skin or contains compounds that reacts to skin in different ways (such as making a soap for more sensitive skin or a soap that encourages the skin to stay moisturized). This course is open to students with no prior experience working with soap and all of the materials are included in the course. This is a hands-on course working with lye, oils and fats, so students are encouraged to dress accordingly.

Students interested in learning other ways to make their own home goods might want to enroll in El Camino’s Bath Products: Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath course. Many people find it difficult to find a cost-effective way to get the exact kind of bath products that they need, particularly if they have uniquely sensitive hair or skin. This class will teach students how to mix their own shampoo, shower gel, bubble bath, bath salt, and exfoliate. Students will learn how to select the proper ingredients, where to source those ingredients and how to get the proper equipment together for home soap making. In addition, students will learn how to add glycerine extracts, herbs and essential oils to make the shampoos, gels and salts personalized for a student’s hair and skin. There is a 35-dollar material fee included with the course, but students will be able to take an array of bathroom products home with them at the end of the course.

Another option for students learning home crafting skills is El Camino College’s Candle Making Class. In this hands-on course, students will learn the traditional art of hand molding candles and preparing them for personal use. Students who take this class will learn about the history of candle making and how the process has developed over the centuries, and they will also learn all about the supplies and tools they need to mold candles at home. Then, students will participate in practical demonstrations as they make different kinds of candles using different waxes and molds. Students will also learn how modern candles are colored and scented, allowing students to start making fragrant and beautiful candles on their own for far less than the cost of an artisanal candle at a retailer. The course does have a materials fee, but students will leave the course with several handmade candles.

Floral Arranging Classes at The American School of Flower Design

Flower design is a pleasant and accessible creative art, and students who learn the process of arranging flowers will be able to design decorations for almost any occasion. At The American School of Flower Design, students will receive hands-on instruction in traditional and modern floral design practices and learn how professional florists create arrangements. Founded by world-renowned floral designer Michael Gaffney, the school’s goal is to provide accessible, innovative and enjoyable floral arrangement classes to students of all skill levels. All of the courses aim to give students the skills they need to create vibrant and evocative floral arrangements that they can display in their homes or offices and that are accessible enough to allow them to start designing arrangements on their own time. Students seeking a rewarding and pleasurable hobby should consider enrolling in one of the American School of Flower Design’s beginner courses.

Students with no prior floral design experience should consider enrolling in Introduction to Flower Design. In this class, students will learn the traditional art of flower design and the fundamental techniques associated with creating beautiful arrangements. This course will introduce students to selecting and sourcing flowers and containers, including lessons on the best ways to buy and sell flowers on individual and wholesale markets. Students enrolled in the course will receive their own collection of flowers to work with, and the class covers ten different styles of flower design, ranging from American to European to traditional bridal design. By the end of the course, students will have spent two days creating beautiful designs, touring flower markets and learning hands-on crafting techniques. Not only will students get to take their flowers home with them, they will also receive a signed copy of Gaffney’s well-regarded flower design book.

For students who are looking to get their feet wet in the world of flower design, The American School of Flower Design offers a Floral Design Sampler course. In this one-day class, students will learn the basics of American and European flower design traditions in three hands-on experiential projects. This course is an ideal introduction to the world of flower design; students can take all three of their projects home with them. Materials are included in the course (including containers and tools), and students will use the practical techniques that professional florists and flower designers use to keep the flowers in their arrangements alive and beautiful for weeks. This course offers an ideal opportunity for students to learn the processes and techniques of flower design so that they can decide if they want to pursue these skills further.

Students who decide to pursue more advanced flower design training should consider the Flower Design Star: 1 Week Comprehensive course. In this class, students will spend a week learning all about the creative and practical aspects of professional flower design projects. The course covers 24 different flower design styles, including American, European, Asian and bridal floral design patterns. The course covers all of the major design styles that are accessible on the commercial market, and students will get practical experience buying flowers from wholesalers, a lesson that includes a trip to a real flower market. The course ends with practical exercises involving the design process of a mock wedding. By the end of the course, students will have a firm understanding of the principles of floral design, and they will be able to begin creating their own evocative arrangements. The course includes over,000 dollars of materials, including flowers and containers, and students can take all of their designs home with them once they are complete.

Photography Classes at The Digital Photo Academy

With the proliferation of smartphones, more and more people are carrying high-quality digital cameras with them everywhere they do. This has introduced a lot of people to the world of hobbyist photography, and The Digital Photo Academy is here to help students in LA learn more about the styles and techniques underlying digital photography. Launched in 2007, The Digital Photo Academy is a nationwide collective of professional photographers dedicated to preserving the art of photography and teaching students how to take their personal projects to the next level. These classes aim to help students develop a unique style and voice in their photographs and introduce them to a wider community of digital photography hobbyists and professionals. Classes are open to beginner and experienced students alike, so no matter how comfortable you are with a digital camera, there is something for everyone at The Digital Photo Academy.

Students who are brand new to digital photography may find it difficult to move from a point-and-click camera phone to a hobbyist camera. The Digital Photo Academy can help with this transition in their Master Your Digital Camera’s Controls course. This course is designed for new camera owners who want to learn how to easily and effectively upgrade the quality of their work by taking advantage of the features their cameras provide. What skills a student learns will vary depending on the make and model of the camera that they bring to the course, but regardless of this, they will learn how they can use their camera to take more compelling and evocative photos. As a bonus, students who complete this course will receive a discount on a future photography composition course they enroll in through The Digital Photo Academy.

One such class is The Digital Photo Academy’s Digital Photography Live in the Field @ Long Beach. In this guided composition course, students will travel to Long Beach at around dusk and spend a few hours receiving guided, freeform digital photography lessons. Students will learn practical photography skills like the rule of thirds and the process of framing objects within a shot. Long Beach’s scenic landmarks, including its famous lighthouse and The Queen Mary, are ideal subjects for student photographers, as is the serene natural beauty of the ocean. Students enrolled in this class will receive hands-on instruction from digital photography experts ready to help students master the art of low-light photography. DPA also offers traveling composition courses at famous LA locations like Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Park, and Little Corona.

Students looking for guided instruction may want to consider a more personalized education through DPA’s All Day Private Digital Photography Lessons program. In this six-hour private lesson, students will work one-on-one with an experienced photographer who can offer them training and guidance in all manner of digital photography concepts. Since these are private lessons, students will have more opportunities to customize their curriculum and learn the skills that they need to succeed in their photography goals. Some possible lessons include guided instruction on the use of a student’s particular camera, lessons on framing, lighting and composing photographers and post-capture evaluations that can help students identify the markers of their style or the common pitfalls that their photographs may be falling into. Within limitations, students will be able to work with an instructor to find an ideal site for their lessons so that they can photograph the kinds of subjects that interest them.

Paint and Sip Classes at Brushstrokes + Beverages

Paint and Sip courses are growing in popularity as they combine two fairly fun activities, painting and social drinking. Brushstrokes + Beverages is a national paint and sip company that organizes hudrends of events in the LA area and provides students with a welcoming space to meet people, learn to paint and enjoy an evening out. These courses are overseen by experienced instructors and they all aim to provide students with guided painting instruction in a low stakes setting. Brushstrokes + Beverages holds classes at a variety of different locations, including their corporate studio locations and various restaurants across the city. The course is BYOB, so students are encouraged to bring their own beer and wine to share as they learn how to paint. If the course is held at a restaurant, students will need to purchase beverages from the venue.

Brushstrokes + Beverages offers a wide range of focused painting classes that each cover a subject or theme, giving students the opportunity to enroll in a class that has them painting something that interests them. These courses range from natural subjects like Spring Daisies, Fireflies, and Tranquil Bays to sites like the LA cityscape or Belmont Pier. These classes all offer students the chance to learn how to paint acrylics on canvas from expert instructors who are ready to give students the attention they need to master the basics of painting. All of this takes place in a low-stress studio setting where students can mingle with their classmates, enjoy a good bottle of wine and leave the class with a token of their artistic skills.

Students looking to paint a unique and personal decoration for their home may want to consider Brushstrokes + Beverage’s PAINT your PET course. In this class, students will provide the company with a picture of their pet (be they a cat, dog, bird, or any other animal that is special to you), and a talented artist will sketch that picture onto a canvas before the session. Then, once students arrive at the studio, they will be given a line art canvas of their pet that they will spend the evening painting in. This is an incredibly low-stress way to learn the art of fine painting while making a souvenir canvas you can hang in your home or office. The image of your pet will be finely detailed, giving you a structured and guided experience, while the canvas background will be left blank to give you the freedom to paint your pet in whatever scenario you’d like.

Anyone wanting a more open-ended experience or looking to flex their creative muscles can attend one of Brushstrokes + Beverage’s Creative Night events. These events, which run regularly, are open studio workshops in which students can plan and paint whatever happens to inspire them at the moment. Students enrolled in this class will still receive individual guidance from instructors who are there to help them turn their ideas into a finalized painting, and they can still choose to replicate the kinds of paintings that are offered in other paint and sip courses. Students will need to be in contact with the company ahead of their scheduled course to have the materials they need ready, but this amounts to choosing whether you want a small, standard, or landscape canvas. Like all of Brushstroke + Beverage’s classes, this course is BYOB and students are encouraged to enjoy the experience responsibly.

Art Classes at The Art Studio

The Art Studio is one of Orange County’s finest art education spaces and has operated for nearly 30 years. The studio offers a range of art classes that cater to learners of all ages, making it a welcoming environment for beginner artists to come and practice their craft. All of the classes are taught by experienced artists, and the school’s owner remains an active participant in the education process and the local arts community in LA. The school aims to provide students with an inviting and accessible learning environment to receive art instruction and get hands-on experience with the creative process. Regardless of what kind of art you are interested in learning, there is a good chance that a course is offered through The Art Studio.

One of The Art Studio’s more popular courses, Weekly Portrait & Figure (Adults & Teens), offers students a space to learn the art of life portrait painting in various mediums. Over the course of four class sessions, students will learn the art of oil painting and the theories of composition that underscore great art. In this class, students will spend the first three days of the session learning traditional portrait painting styles and techniques, including lessons on the subtlety of form, recreating likenesses and refining edges. On the final day of the class, students will take the lessons that they have learned and apply them in a practical studio session where they paint a live model. While this is a beginner-friendly course (new artists are encouraged to enroll, and the class is open to students as young as 13), attendees must provide their own art supplies.

Students who are interested in oil painting but would prefer a different subject matter can choose to enroll in The Art Studio’s Weekly Oil Painting/Drawing (Adults & Teens) studio seminars. This course aims to teach students the techniques and practices most commonly associated with oil painting, and over four sessions, they will receive focused instruction on the fine process of painting. All of these studio sessions are taught by experienced MFAs, and the instructors will be there to guide students through all of the challenges that may arise as they are learning to paint. This course aims to introduce students of all ages to oil painting as a hobby, so the class is designed with novice painters in mind. Students will need to bring their own supplies from a list provided by the instructor.

If painting isn’t up your alley, you may be interested in a class on the plastic arts, like The Art Studio’s Weekly Sculpting (Adults & Teens) art course. This course aims to teach students the art of working with clay to create detailed and impressive 3D sculpted objects that students can cast and take home with them. Experienced instructors will guide students through preparing and planning out their sculpture, beginning the molding of the clay and completing the project, be that with a mold or a kiln. The studio session is relatively open, and students can work on their projects independently while receiving assistance from the course instructors. Each session is booked individually, but The Art Studio recommends booking multiple sessions to ensure that you have the time to finish your projects. Many art supplies are available for rental at the site.

Knitting Classes at The Knitting Tree, LA

Knitting is one of the many hobbies that have risen in popularity since 2020. While many people attempt to learn how to knit on their own, service providers like The Knitting Tree, LA know that this fun and accessible hobby only becomes easier with the help of professional instructors to guide beginners through the process of becoming experienced knitters. The Knitting Tree is one of LA’s finest knitting and fiber arts locations, and they offer high-quality instruction and some of the finest high-quality yarn and knitting supplies available on the consumer market. The Knitting Tree is also home to a vibrant knitting community, meaning that students who enroll in courses here can meet new people and share their hobbies with fellow enthusiasts.

Students who are new to knitting may want to enroll in The Knitting Tree’s Beginning Knitting Saturdays course. This course, which takes place over four Saturdays, will introduce students to the basic elements of knitting and the fundamentals of the craft. Students will learn how to form knits and purls, how to cast on, how to work with multiple kinds of needles and practical skills like how to read a knitting pattern and how to select the proper kind of yarn for a project. Over the four sessions, students will work on three different projects: a shawl, a scarf and a hat. Attendees will be able to take all of these projects home with them and, with the help of the experienced instructors working with The Knitting Tree, students will be ready for more advanced knitting projects and classes. For students who can’t attend on Saturdays, The Knitting Tree also offers this course on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The Knitting Tree also offers focused courses for beginner knitters, like their Fixing Knitting Mistakes course. This class is designed to help students identify and fix common mistakes that novice knitters make to ensure they don’t waste time and materials on fixable errors. In this class, students will be given a pre-knit swatch full of errors easily corrected with the proper effort and guidance. An experienced instructor will help students identify these errors and correct them to continue working on the piece without risking it falling apart. This course does require students to be comfortable with knitting and purling (such as having enrolled in a beginner knitting class), but the class is still aimed at newer knitters looking to improve their techniques and become more efficient at their craft.

Another popular, related craft is crochet, and The Knitting Tree offers regular crochet training in their Beginning Crochet Sundays courses. While these are both methods of making garments and fabric goods, crocheted goods tend to be thicker and fuller than knitted garments, which have more flexibility and are smoother. If you want to learn how to crochet garments, this might be the right course for you. Like their knitting course, students will spend four sessions learning hands-on crochet techniques from experienced instructors, and they will learn practical skills like reading patterns and learning about different kinds of yarn. Students will receive the supplies they need to crochet a hat, a scarf and a shawl and leave the course equipped with the skills needed to move on to more elaborate projects. Currently, courses are also scheduled for Wednesday evenings.
