School Spotlight: Flatiron School

What is Flatiron? Founded in 2012, Flatiron School is one of the nation's premier providers of career-focused tech bootcamps.

They offer a range of courses covering in-demand career skills and aim to provide their students with the training and support they need to find work in the tech sector. Flatiron has partnered with government agencies and Ivy League universities to create immersive career training programs for a diverse range of students, and they were the first bootcamp provider to release verified job reports documenting the placement of their graduates. Since their founding, they have placed more than 5,000 bootcamp graduates in high-paying tech positions, and they have been recognized by Course Report, SwitchUp and Career Karma as one of the top tech bootcamp providers in the world.

What Are Classes Like?

FlatIron School offers in-person courses at their Denver and New York City campuses and digitally through live online class sessions. Bootcamps can be taken either in full-time sessions or part-time. In the full-time sessions, students will work directly with live instructors in regularly scheduled seminar meetings. During these sessions, even if they are online, students can ask questions and receive feedback on their work, ensuring that they do not fall behind and can grasp important skills and concepts. In the part-time courses, students will work asynchronously and receive the bulk of their training through pre-recorded lectures and hands-on modules. There are live lectures and office hours that students will be encouraged to attend. The in-person bootcamps run for 15 weeks, and the asynchronous courses are designed to be completed in 40 weeks (though an individual’s pace will impact that total time taken).

What Bootcamps Do They Teach?

Software Engineering Bootcamp: Flatiron School’s award-winning coding bootcamp aims to provide students with the professional development training they need to start a new career in software engineering. The course covers full-stack software and web application development skills, including lessons in JavaScript and Python and practical lessons working with APIs, ReactJS, JSON, and A1 SQL Builder. During this course, students will work on practical software design projects and begin creating their own working applications. In addition, the course has begun to incorporate emerging technologies and new developments in software engineering, helping to ensure that new students stay on the cutting edge of the programming world. Currently, this means that the course will emphasize the ways in which AI technologies are altering the landscape of computer programming. This training will help students entering the workforce remain on top of the expectations employers will have for them. The course ends with a cumulative project in which groups of students collaborate to design and develop a full-fledged software application that they can take with them onto the job market as a demonstration of their skills.

Key Information: This course is available as a 15-week, full-time live course or a self-paced, asynchronous online class. Students who enroll in the full-time program must complete a self-paced introductory course to familiarize themselves with the basics of computer coding (HTML and CSS and JavaScript). The course costs $17,900, and there is a $99 deposit. Loans and installment plans are available for qualifying students. Students who complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.

Data Science Bootcamp: Businesses and institutions are becoming increasingly aware of how important good data collection and analysis practices are to long-term success. Human beings generate approximately 2,500,000,000,000,000 bytes of data every day, and the practice of organizing and interpreting that data has become a big business in and of itself. Data Scientists are the computer programmers tasked with building the applications that can make this huge amount of data manageable and the machines and algorithms that allow for more effective and efficient collection and interpretation. In this bootcamp, students will learn foundational SQL and Python programming skills and explore the process of scientific computing and quantitative statistical analysis. With these skills in hand, the latter half of the course will focus on developments in machine learning technologies and the algorithms that allow computers to collect and interpret data without needing a human operator. These technologies have the potential to radically alter the landscape of data science and analysis, so aspiring professionals will need to remain on the cutting edge. This course concludes with a capstone project in which students will create working data science applications that they can add to their professional portfolio to demonstrate their skills.

Key Information: This course is delivered in two modalities, a 15-week, live course (in-person or online) and a self-paced, asynchronous version delivered entirely online. Students enrolled in the live version of the course will need to complete an asynchronous preparatory course covering the basics of computer programming and statistical analysis. The course costs $16,900 (with a $99 deposit fee), with options for qualifying students to receive loans or pay in installments. Students who complete the course will earn a certificate of completion to add to their professional portfolio and application materials.

Cybersecurity Bootcamp: As data collection becomes an increasingly important part of the daily operations of businesses and institutions, it is also becoming more important to protect this data. Cybersecurity is the process of building networks, systems and databases that are protected from unauthorized access and potentially harmful attacks. Cybersecurity comes in many different forms, and students enrolled in this bootcamp will receive an overview of all of the major theories and practices within the field. Students will begin by learning cybersecurity fundamentals, including network security components, architecture and common weaknesses and exploits. Then, students will spend time studying risk management, cyber warfare and intelligence analysis. With recent updates to the course, students will also work with ChatGPT and other AI analysis tools to detect flaws in their systems. Finally, students will learn the art of Grey hat hacking, the process by which students learn to attack systems to understand their failings. Students will conclude the course with an introduction to the world of cryptography, and they will work on a capstone project in which they design a secure network and demonstrate their proficiency in all of the major tasks of a professional Cybersecurity Expert.

Key Information: Flatiron offers two versions of this course. The first is a 15-week, live course available in-person or online. The second is an asynchronous, self-paced online course, which Flatiron expects students working regularly to complete in approximately 40 weeks. Students enrolled in the live course must complete a pre-work seminar before the course begins. The class costs $16,900 (with a $99 deposit). Financing options and installment plans are available for qualifying students. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion, and this course will count towards some requirements for various professional cybersecurity certification programs.

Product, UX and UI Design Bootcamp: User interface and user experience design are vital to any successful project launch. Even the most useful bit of software is unlikely to catch on and become adapted if its interface is obtuse, clunky or difficult to use. This course aims to teach students strategies for designing user interfaces and the best practices for testing and iterating upon those interfaces. In the first phase of the course, students will learn how to use generative AI technology to test user interfaces, create personas, and utilize natural language processing (NLP) programs to automate the identification and categorization of patterns and draft surveys for gathering user data. In the second section, students will learn about the UI design process, including lessons on working with AI and other automated generative tools. In the final two phases of the course, students will work in practical design studios to construct and test prototype web applications. In addition to working with real-world design projects, students will spend time fine-tuning and modifying automated generative design applications, giving them hands-on experience working with next-generation AI design technology. By the end of the course, students will have a collection of completed designs that they add to their professional portfolio, and they can assure prospective employers that they are prepared to work with newly emerging technologies.

Key Information: This course is available as a 15-week full-time program or an asynchronous, self-paced program (that Flatiron expects most students will complete in about 40 weeks). Students who attend the live program will need to complete a self-paced introductory course before the program. The program costs $16,900, with installment plans and financing options available for qualifying students. Students who complete this program will receive a certificate of completion.
