That’s why during my most recent work trip, I made it a point to choose a unique experience that I could take back to Ohio with me. That led me to an upscale, speakeasy-style bar for a cocktail making class with friends.
Stepping Through the Doors
If I had stumbled on this building without knowing it was a cocktail-making class, I’d have been shocked to find it was a bar. That's kind of the point of a speakeasy—right? But the suits in the shopfront really did an excellent job of setting the tone for the place. They were fancy, sophisticated, and inviting. Very on-brand for the kind of cocktails we were going to make.
When we first entered, the first thing I noticed was the number of couples. At least three pairs were on dates, one of whom I would later learn was planning to get married. The activity seemed perfect for that kind of vibe since each station was set up for two people, but even though my friends and I were split into pairs, we were all around the same table so there was no real separation.
The Hands-On Experience
The instructor’s name was Eric, and his enthusiasm for our visit was infectious. In some cases, it’s hard to feel someone’s passion for something they've turned into a job. So often, when our hobbies become habits, it’s easy to lose track of why we do what we do, and that can translate to a lackluster, mechanical approach to teaching. With Eric, this wasn’t the case. He was smiling, invested, and really good at building that connection between his art, and his instruction.
For my first cocktail-making class, this was absolutely phenomenal. There’s something magical about crafting your own drink, and the class was set up to provide a hands-on, immersive experience. I was given a glass, a shaker, and all the tools I needed to start, and then I was honed in on Eric as he walked us through two fruity, zesty cocktails.
It wasn’t just about following a recipe—he could have handed us pamphlets and given us a 10 minute demonstration if he wanted—it was about learning techniques that professional bartenders use to make drinks look and taste amazing. We didn’t just learn that fresh fruit is better for cocktails that concentrate, we learned why. We didn’t just learn how to use a shaker, we learned how to hold it to keep our hands from freezing, we learned how long to shake it for, we learned about the right amount of ice or garnish for our drinks. For an introductory level, everything was covered.
The class was an ideal mix of learning and fun. The drinks we made were simple but satisfying, and I think that was important for the people learning alongside us, trying to juggle learning a new skill with learning their date, or catching up with their partner.
A Relaxing Backroom Retreat
After we finished making our cocktails, we were encouraged to sit back and enjoy the drinks in the speakeasy’s hidden backroom. The space was small, cozy, and surprisingly peaceful. There were TV’s, but they weren’t up too high. The conversation was at a manageable level despite the number of people who were in there (and the fact that they were drinking). It really helped with the immersion, especially because I have a feeling that J.Bespoke is really trying to lean into their easy, sophisticated vibe.
Though I didn’t try the snacks, the venue had a full menu to choose from. It was a perfect space for a quiet moment with friends or a chance to just unwind. That’s when I shook hands with a few of the people I’d met in the front room, and they told me more about themselves, their relationships, their work and their goals. The back room was a highlight of the venue for me, and probably what a lot of people are looking for when they book at a speakeasy-style location. Dim lights, engaging conversation—I’d give it a 10/10 in terms of creating a memorable experience.
The Class Highlights
If I had to start, one of the things that stood out about the class was how many couples were in attendance, but how despite that, the class didn’t feel exclusive in any way. There were also groups of friends that had been partnered off, and I have no doubt that even solo participants would quickly be able to make connections with others around the bar.
The instructor also made a real effort to engage with everyone, and that’s a standout because many times, it’s easy for the instructor to speak to a room at large. The classes aren’t too big, maybe 10-15 people in mine, and it felt like Eric had a chance to speak with each of us. Whether you were there with a date, a friend, or by yourself, there was a palpable sense of community, and we all learned together. That’s one of the best parts of taking a public class like this, getting to connect with others who share the same enthusiasm for picking up a new hobby or skill. It’s just fun to watch.
Was It Worth It?
Absolutely. The cocktail-making class at this NYC speakeasy was a unique and memorable experience. From the intimate setting to the expert guidance from the instructor, it was a perfect way to dive into the world of mixology. The combination of hands-on learning, delicious drinks, and a cozy environment made it a standout activity in the city. The drinks were smooth, and I walked away feeling like I had learned something new, but also like I’d learned a bit more about New York and her people. What they liked. How they lived. This class was great for authentic conversation, and relaxing in a welcoming, tucked-away space.
If you’re looking for a fun, engaging, and memorable night out in NYC, this class is definitely worth considering. Whether you’re a cocktail enthusiast or someone looking to try something new, the experience is full of value, both in terms of the skills you’ll learn and the atmosphere you’ll enjoy. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to break away from the usual night out and do something that’s as much about learning as it is about having fun and making new friends. Would I do it again? Without question.
